Keeping in touch
5 March 2010
I normally would have sent out another milestone email, but I didn’t actually send it. Here it is:
Hey, it’s been a while since I last sent out a message to my list. Did you miss me? You did? Aw, shucks.
Getting to good news quickly: I shot an episode of 24. Working on the well-known Fox drama was a great experience, and my episode should air the first week in May. As a reporter I query somebody about something. (I won’t say more to avoid spoiling the plot … but trust me, I could.)
Other highlights include moving to a sweet new pad, sitting next to a friend while his Super Bowl ad aired, playing a doctor on a TLC show called Your Kid Ate What?, shooting some short films, and — oh yeah — singing in a chorus with Ray Davies of The Kinks. Good stuff!
So. Enough about me. What about you? I haven’t heard from you in a while. Yes, I mean you. Let me know what you’re up to. Don’t make me come to your house with my camera crew to find out — I only play a reporter on TV.
Best,
Kevin

My first year in Los Angeles!
22 September 2009
I just sent out a milestone email, highlighting the six months since my last milestone email. Here it is, for those not on my list:
Hey there! I have now lived one year in Los Angeles. The year in one word: awesome. Many good things keep happening, professionally and personally. Some highlights of recent awesomeness:
I wrapped the independent feature film Look in the Mirror. What a great experience. I play the lead character, so there were many days of work, challenging and rewarding. Principal photography and pick-up scenes are both done as of last week, and it’s about to be submitted to festivals! Big thanks to that gang.
I’m very happy with my new commercial agent, Kazarian/Spencer/Ruskin & Associates, commonly called KSR. It’s awesome that KSR attracts good people. Another great actor in my indie film? She’s with KSR. A very talented actor in a recent reading? Ditto. A new friend I met at an Audi commercial? Yup, you guessed it, he’s with KSR, too. “They’re family,” he said, over one of LA’s best burgers at The Counter in Santa Monica.
I had a rewarding table read of a new script from a Boston writer, and it offered a chance to reconnect with actors from Brotherhood. I performed in a new play at the Autry Museum, whose theater is dedicated to storytelling focused on Native Americans. I started to understudy a popular show at Two Roads Theatre. I shot a webisode where hilarious immoral things happen. I filmed a scene with a Boston friend. I did long-form improv at UCB. I shot short films at USC. I auditioned for TV shows. I did voiceover work.
I … well, the list goes on. I can’t possibly include every Good Thing, but I’ll finish by expressing gratitude for the awesome peers I have discovered in my two top-secret acting communities. I feel at home and I’m loving the ever-growing web of people I am meeting here. You guys rock! (And the communities are not really top-secret.)
Finally, in case you haven’t noticed, social media is the new thing. You know, things like Twitter. My favorite new Site Of The Week is Personas. You should go there now and enter your name to see how the Internet sees you. But Personas is not perfect. Enter my name, and the largest chunk comes out as “sports.” Uh, that’s not me. So know that the Kevin Ashworth who is a teenage soccer phenom in Palo Alto, and the Kevin Ashworth who plays rugby in the Cayman Islands, and the Kevin Ashworth who lives in Toronto and is my Facebook friend and his status updates are always about baseball — these are different Kevin Ashworths. Good guys, well-named, but different.
That’s it for now. More (always more) on Bloggie Blog. Thank you for reading, and please let me know if there’s anything I can do for you!
Best,
Kevin
Update
Six months in Los Angeles
5 March 2009
I just sent out a milestone email. Here it is, for those not on my list:
Hi there! Time for another update. This one is a little milestone. Six months ago, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting here. Holey moley, what a whirlwind experience it has been. One reason after another to use exclamation points — but I’ll exercise editorial restraint and not burden you with too many of those.
Of course, I’m not new to acting, having done lots of good work in Boston, where I was in several commercials and plays (from 1776 to Streetcar), and a TV drama (Brotherhood). But one thing that is new about acting here, is the quantity. It may not be an exaggeration to say I’ve had more auditions since moving here than during my many years in Boston. Which is just what I wanted.
With all that, I’ve landed several projects already. A few highlights: a disturbing indie film, a hilarious USC film, some readings and benefit performances, and recent voiceover work on AIDS in Thailand that is being presented at the UN this month. Also … kind of exciting … as I type this, I am deciding whether to accept an offer to play the lead role in a full-length independent feature film. My people will be contacting their people soon. Seriously, there are so many things going on, so many ways for me to be a busy happy actor, so many sentences that could end in exclamation points — but I’ll try to dish those out judiciously, as I said.
Beyond any of these individual projects, I have a strong sense of hope for 2009, a strong sense of personal progress so far, and a deep appreciation for all the people I am meeting. I’m seeing the results of being here, meeting people, getting in gear and working hard to figure it out. It’s all good.
Okay, I know, six months is nothing. I’m still the new guy, so welcome me to town on Facebook, or on my web site, where you’ll find my acting news and updates, my demo reel and my blog which I update several times a week, on topics ranging from Life in Los Angeles to Battlestar Galactica.
By the way, here is my awesome Tip Of The Day: Before venturing into Hollywood, do a quick check of NavigateHollywood.com. My neighborhood is sometimes a pain to navigate, but this handsomely designed site almost made Oscars week bearable. Don’t let road closures get you down.
Well, that’s it for now. More (always more) on Bloggie Blog. Thank you for reading this far, and please let me know if there’s anything I can do for you.
Here’s to six more amazing months … amazing for me and amazing for you! Exclamation point!
Best,
Kevin
