Blood on the Scales
7 February 2009
Starting to watch the 4th episode of BSG‘s final half-season. More Felix Gaeta. More blah blah blah. Where’s Starbuck, the 12th Cylon, the stuff we’ve been waiting for?! In the words of a friend of mine, sent via SMS before I could even watch this episode:
Doood! Is it just me of has BSG been sorta off with the new episodes? I mean, who gives a frak about Gaeta? And a coup killing off the quorum?? I dunno. It’s feeling weird.
I concur.
But the good of this episode: the talented Mark Sheppard is brought back to play Romo Lampkin, the tough lawyer who cares so much about animals. He gets hired on a “field trip for justice” — to defend Admiral Adama on charges of treason. Good actor, good character, good plot point for our times. Nice!
Okay, the episode’s over now. So much death on this episode. Useless killing. Just like our planet here. Damn. But maybe the good guys prevail in the end?
Language
On regional accents
6 February 2009
There’s a very successful voiceover guy out there who consistently and egregiously mispronounces the word authentic. He says, more or less, “uhthentic.” It’s pretty horrible.
This raises some questions:
1. Where is he from? Ans: Possibly Chicago.
1a. If indeed Chicago: Do lots of Chicagoans misspeak thus?
2. If a major talent can butcher the language, does this bode well for lowly me, who must also butcher certain sounds due to my sheltered upbringing?
2a. If yes: Why don’t I feel better about this?
2b. If no: Is that because my regionalisms don’t count as much because I come from a place that’s less populated?
In all, I really don’t care about these Q’s & A’s as much as I want him to stop mispronouncing that word on his prominent web site slash podcast thingies. Et’s pritty harrible.
Life in Los Angeles
I welcome the rain!
5 February 2009
It’s a rainy day in LA. Some real rain. Not truly torrential, but wipers at full speed not intermittent. And I love it! We need the moisture and I kinda got sick of perfect sunny days all the time. “Let it rain, let it rain, let your love rain down on me.”

An open letter to President Obama
From what I can tell, I qualify … at least until 04/15

Dear Mr. President,
I haven’t paid certain taxes. So … are you hiring? I sure could use a job. I’m smart, insightful and full of hope. Thanks for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Kevin Ashworth

Fire in the hole!
3 February 2009
Quick summary of “The Oath,” the latest episode of Battlestar Galactica: Revolution! Dead and wounded! A big percussion-filled finish with a shout of “Fire in the hole!” followed by the thrilling but dreaded “to be continued” across the bottom of a black screen!
So — watching this episode late at night, just before hoping to fall asleep was a bad idea, is that what you’re saying? Ay, ay, ay! Stay tuned.

The triiiplets do their thiiing
2 February 2009
You know about the NYT article last week that got the hefty-bonuses story started. It made me extremely upset, and somebody prominent called the year’s bonuses “shameful.”
But you know all that. What you might not know is that my brilliant friends from Massachusetts, triplet performance artists called Triiibe, went to Wall Street a few months back with this intriguing guerilla performance piece on the topic. They stand there asking for dough, in a carefully stylized performance. It’s great. Check it out!
Technology
iPhone plea
1 February 2009
Here’s how often I use “Coverflow” view when in iPod mode: never ever ever. In fact, every time my iPod goes into that useles, maddening album-art mode, I die a little inside and/or swear a lot outside. IT SUCKS!
Please, please, please: how do I turn it off for good?! Ten bucks to the first that can show me how.
