Recently, IMDb Pro did a small redesign. Quick review: Looks better in browser, prints horribly.

I offer herein a quick fix to the printing problem, at least in Safari / Mac OS X. (Other browsers should have similar solutions for the savvy web user.)

Create a file named something.css and store it on your hard drive wherever you want. I call mine “overcome.css” and put in a my Documents folder. Edit this file with a plain-text editor. Do not use Word. Put this text, this CSS code, into that file, then save it and close it:

@media print {
#nav-wrapper { display: none; }
}

(Alternate solution if plain-text editing is beyond your computer routine: download overcome.css.)

Now in Safari, go to Safari > Preferences > Advanced. Where it says Style Sheet, select the file you just created or downloaded. That’s it! See the difference below, where I offer a side-by-side comparison of the first printed page of my IMDb Pro page. Quick review: Better. Way better. IMDb should hire me.

UPDATE: It turns out that Safari users will benefit from one other CSS change, due to poor cross-browser issues with the new IMDb Pro look. Add this to overcome.css in order to avoid the weird thing that happens where the page shifts down 21 pixels just as it finishes rendering. I’ve altered the download file accordingly.

#nav-wrapper #navbar { margin: 0 !important; }

Again, IMDb should hire me.

Actors: If you’re new to town, or if you’re new to targeting commercials, you can turn to many paid online and print sources to learn who casts commercials in Los Angeles and where they work. The trouble is, these lists aren’t visual, and they contain long lists, while the reality is, that the few, busiest commercial casting directors do most of the work.

Take a look at this map I made over on the Google. It shows the busiest commercial casting locations in LA. This is handy information! But not complete. Some of these are drop-off friendly, others are not. Some good commercials do get cast elsewhere. But most commercial actors are going to one of these places whenever they get an audition from their agent.

Good luck!

My motivation was to check in with my family again, and I got to see my dad and some sibs. While there, I partook in a small portion of America’s Freedom Festival. That’s right, America has a Freedom Festival, and it happens in Provo.

In my parents’ neighborhood, love of country was on display when I arrived from a Boy Scout’s Eagle project of several years ago: US flags flying in front of every house. At right, I reach out to it.

In my sister’s neighborhood, downtown Provo, which has a number of beautiful old homes, the parade happens. She lives one block from the route. Things are tame here, of course, so the 300,000 people who watched it do make for an unusual situation with rules and rule-breaking. The city put up red garbage cans per block, and post-parade the place was pretty durn clean. That’s love of country.

After the parade, at the Freedom Fair (I’m making that up, but it could be correct), we bought sunglasses and Tater Twists. Each plateful of Tater Twists is one russet potato sliced into one continuous curl — with a homemade gadget that involved, literally, a power drill for every potato — and then deep-fried to golden perfection. What a country!

There will always be inequalities in the world, but this phrase refers to the new ways in which we are seeing a divide between the haves and the have-nots with new technologies.

Today I would like to take a moment to applaud AT&T on this front. Here in LA, some of the wealthiest neighborhoods have the worst AT&T coverage. I’m talking about the Hollywood hills, West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. Man, do I admire the Socialist-Commie-Pinko-Democrat-Bleeding-Hearts at AT&T who brazenly do not cater to their richest constituents.

AT&T, you looked at the only neighborhoods in town that could afford iPhones, and you told them to suck it. You go, AT&T!

However, I use a lot of data. Twice the amount needed to qualify for the $15/month savings that I’d hoped for. And since the new plans are capped, maybe it’s not worth giving up unlimited for any cap in order to save $5/month. The included graph shows my data plan usage from AT&T’s wireless account page. I’m at 400 MB/month pretty consistently. What’s your usage?

Over the last 3 days, I’ve had a lot of replacement parts to my black MacBook. Thanks to AppleCare and my 2 external backups, it’s been pretty painless, if a little time consuming. I got new RAM, and an unexpected boost from 2GB to 3GB. Then I needed a new hard drive, too, and an unexpected boost from Mac OS X 10.5 to 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

Embracing change, I switched the DNS servers on our Time Capsule settings from Time Warner Cable’s default values to the settings over at OpenDNS. The internets have gotten peppier with every one of the above changes. Upgrading your RAM or your OS will probably cost most of you money, but you can all upgrade to OpenDNS for free … and I highly recommend you give it a shot!

Just be sure to write down your current settings so you can reverse them if it doesn’t make things peppier for you. (Sidebar: If you say it in French, a peppier might be the guy that walks around fancy restaurants to grind some pepper on your soupe or salade.)

But still….)

Mr Trutanich is the city attorney. A couple of days after learning who he was, I called his office and said thanks. I even tweeted that call! The thanks was for AB 1319 and its protection against advance-fee talent scams, both egregious and subtle. Many actors only hate egregious scams, I support clamping down on the subtle ones, too. Misguided actors are complaining. Why don’t you call him up and thank him for doing some good in the world?

This is one of my favorite poems. It was written by my dear mother, who passed away this week.

The story goes that this poem was inspired long ago by me and my siblings’ propensity for grabbing quickly at things in the basket on top of the fridge whenever dad would hoist us in the air, which he did often. If something fell down, it wasn’t my fault — gravity did it!

 Gwabity

 Kathryn R. Ashworth

	Gwabity did it;
 Gwabity told
	About all the things
 I climbed up and stoled

	Fwom off of the fwidge top
 And put in my pocket.
	Gwabity told,
 Though it couldn't talk it.

	Mama held
 My feet by her hand
	While I giggled and giggled
 At Upside-Down-Land.

	"Oh, oh," I said,
 And Mama did, too,
	As the pennies and pwetties,
 Away they all flew.

A paper clip here,
 A blue marble there,
	And one wubber band
 All hid in my hair.

	"Gwabity makes
 Things fall," Mama said,
	As the things I had gwabbed
 Fell down wound my head.

I’d mentioned this poem to mom recently, and it brought a big smile to her face. A couple of days later she said “Gwabity did it” with a twinkle in her eye. It’s one of the last things my dear mother said to me.

Thank you, mom. I love you. I miss you.

More info will be forthcoming, naturally, but since today was my first rehearsal and since I speak first in the play, I thought I’d type up a snippet from the top of the play, including the last bit of prefatory stage directions into the first lines of dialog:

DOCTOR BAYLISS is nearing forty. A wry, self-controlled man, an easy talker, but with a wisp of sadness that clings even to his self-effacing humor.
AT CURTAIN, JIM is standing at L., staring at the broken tree. He taps his pipe on it, blows through the pipe, feels in his pockets for tobacco, then speaks.

JIM. Where’s your tobacco?
KELLER. I think I left it on the table.

I may wear a bow-tie. Stay tuned!

Careful readers of this blog clearly have too much time on their hand, anyway, so I do not cringe to report that this weekend, we are spending two more days shooting some new scenes for LITM. These are scenes that were deemed necessary after months of ediiting to really make the movie work. Fine by me! Fun group, and I want to the movie to be as good as possible.

Today’s work is being overseen by this ever-vigilant butler, at the Calabasas house. He’s always been here, every day, at the house “I” own, but to be honest, I’m not sure he’ll be seen in the final cut.
